Radiesse Facial Contouring
What is Radiesse?
Radiesse is a long lasting injectable implant/dermal filler, which is composed of synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres, suspended in a gel carrier. These microspheres, once injected, provide a scaffolding, into which the body's own tissue can grow, thereby maintaining the implant in place.
CaHA is a biomaterial with over twenty years of use in orthopaedics, neurosurgery, dentistry and ophthalmology and is the primary mineral constituent of bone and teeth. Radiesse is created by suspending CaHA in a common water based carrier. Because the characteristics are similar to bone and teeth, it is naturally compatible with the body. Radiesse is synthetic and man made, similar to a calcium phosphate and has been extensively tested in clinical trials for over 7 years, with good safety and efficacy results.
Where can Radiesse filler be used?
- Glabella (wrinkles between the eyebrows)
- Nasolabial folds (laughter lines)
- Radial lip lines
- Chin / cheek augmentation
- Depressed scars
- Restoring bulk to ageing/hollowed tissue
The procedure for administering Radiesse is straightforward. Firstly a clinical history is taken by the doctor and all aspects of the treatment outcome will be explained. The area to be treated will then be numbed with local anaesthetic. Then the Radiesse is administered by simple injections just under the skin layer to help plump and smooth the lines. The procedure will take around 30 minutes. After the procedure, some patients resume normal activities immediately, although others prefer to wait for 24 hours, as swelling or redness may occur at the site of the injection.
How long does Radiesse filler last?
Depending on the area being treated, patients will usually see results that last between 1-2 years. However, individual results may vary, depending on a number of factors including age, lifestyle and skin type.
Are there any side effects?
As with any procedure that involves injections, you will have redness and swelling at the treatment site for 24-48 hours and there is also the possibility of bruising too. Occasionally small temporary nodules or lumps may be felt at the treatment site, these will settle in time and massage of the area is recommended to eliminate these. Radiesse cosmetic facial filler is fully approved for facial augmentation with CE mark certification and a number of USA FDA clearances.
