IPL for Hair Removal
How IPL works as a hair removal treatment
The IPL or laser energy is absorbed by the pigment within the hair which creates a heat that destroys the hair root without causing damage to the skin. The light is quickly passed over the area, treating many hairs with one pulse.
Hair grows in cycles. These cycles are known as anagen (growing), catagen (resting) and telegen (dying). In order for the treatment to be effective the hairs must be at the anagen stage.
Is IPL for effective for hair removal?
Yes, the technology is backed by world wide clinical research studies with proven results. The most effective results have been achieved on fair skin and darker hair. However, the treatment is not suitable for black or sun tanned skin. The treatment is also unlikely to work for blond or grey hair.
How many treatments are needed for effective hair removal?
IPL only destroys hairs when they are in the growth phase. At any one moment 20% of hairs are resting or dormant. Repeated sessions will treat these hairs when they re-enter the growth phase. Generally all areas will require at least six treatments at 4-6 weekly intervals, depending on the area being treated.
This depends on many factors including your skin and hair type, ethnic background, hormonal balance and skin sensitivity. It is not possible to categorically state how many treatments an individual will need, however this will be discussed at your consultation.
What parts of the body can be treated?
IPL can treat all external areas of the body and face.
What does a treatment involve?
A full medical history, including any medication (prescribed, herbal or homeopathic) that you are on, is taken by the doctor or therapist. Then a comprehensive treatment programme is written up for your exact needs. Pre treatment photographs will be taken for your notes, which are treated as private and confidential information. The treatment programme will be reviewed at each treatment session and adjusted accordingly. A test patch is needed 24 hours before a full treatment can be carried out. During the treatment the area is prepared and then the applicator head is applied and moved across the area in steps to ensure full coverage. The applicator head is large therefore treatments can be carried out quickly, which is important with today's hectic lifestyles.
Are there any side effects?
There are little or no side effects. The treatment can be uncomfortable; the sensation has been likened to being flicked by an elastic band. If the discomfort is intolerable, then the practitioner can reduce the energy and reduce the discomfort, though results may take longer to be seen. During the treatment the skin may feel warm and go slightly red. There is a slight chance that the skin may blister or crust over, though this normally resolves within a few days. In darker skins there is a slight risk of lightening the skin.
You must avoid tanning and even fake tans during the treatment.
